LOW SPERM COUNT

Your sperm quality may fluctuate over shorter or longer periods of time. This is normal. The quality of semen is also different from man to man. If you are unsure of  the quality of your sperm, you can get a sperm count analysis.

Long-term illness may cause low sperm count as the sperm can deteriorate severely and in some cases, it can cause sterility. Therefore, it can be a good idea to store your sperm in a sperm deposit before starting e.g. chemotherapy.

Even if you are fit and healthy, there are many things that can cause low sperm count:

Fever
Fever is a key determinant of whether you have good semen quality. If you have had a fever it can have a big impact on your sperm quality for up to three months, because that is how long it takes for sperm cells to form and mature.

Heat
Sperm cells are sensitive to heat and cannot survive very long at high temperatures. Although the body has compensatory mechanisms such as sweating and adjustment of the scrotum, the following should be avoided:
– Long stays in a sauna
– Long, hot baths
– Use of tanning booths and excessive sunbathing
– Tight pants

Age
Although it is possible for men to have children at an older age, sperm count, volume and motility reduces with age.

Food
Too much coffee, alcohol and cola can lead to reduced sperm quality.

Hormones
Anabolic steroids and other use of hormones can lead to reduced sperm quality. However, the body also experiences natural hormonal changes, which may cause natural fluctuations in sperm quality.

Smoking
Tobacco smoking – both cigarettes and stronger tobaccos – can reduce sperm quality.

Other facts
Besides the above, your sperm quality may be affected by for example obesity, drug abuse, lack of exercise, excessive exercise, stress and lack of sleep.
